Cabinet Overview

Since its admission to the Union in 1845, Florida's governance structure has been modified over time. From 1885-2003, it was the only state to independently elect seven constitutionally created statewide officials including the Governor as Chief Executive and six additional state executives known collectively as the "Cabinet" with specified powers and duties.

In 1998, the Constitutional Revision Commission proposed, and Floridians approved, an amendment to the Florida Constitution that reduced the Cabinet from six to three independently elected officers serving alongside the Governor. The Cabinet is composed of the Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, and Commissioner of Agriculture.

Together, these elected officials, with the Governor as Chair, serve as a collective decision making body for certain state agencies, boards, and commissions.
